I cannot possibly be the only homeowner who is just now getting around to mulching.
For someone who does as much gardening as I do, it is kind of insane. I don’t know what I was thinking. Partly, I think my issue was that I never priced mulch and in my head it was a lot more expensive than it is in reality.
So just in case you’re brilliant like me, here are some reasons you should throw caution to the wind and mulch your beds every 1-2 years:
- it’s inexpensive
- it’s easy and doesn’t take much time
- reduces weeds, saving you more time and money
- makes watering more efficient, saving you more time and money
- improves the soil by physically protecting it from things like run off and by adding and harboring nutrients, saving you time and money (get the drift)
- and on….
I’m not cool enough to make my own mulch yet, but you’d better believe that’s on my list of things to DIY now, too. If you’re still planning on buying commercial mulch like we did, Lowe’s has a cool calculator that looks like this:
I’m sure other stores our there have something similar and there’s always that little calculating machine known as your head. Buuut sometimes it’s nice to get a little help in your planning.
Now, I bet most of you out there are saying to yourselves, “Duh, this girl is an idiot! We all know this already.” But I still believe that my own idiocy is proof that there are lots of other people out there like me who need a little kick in the pants.
Go! Get some mulch!
